I Returned Home from Work to Find My Adopted Twin Daughters, 16, Had Changed the Locks and Kicked Me Out

Thirteen years ago, I adopted my late husband’s secret twin daughters after his fatal car crash revealed his double life. At sixteen, they locked me out of my home. A week later, I learned why.

The morning Andrew died started like any other, until the phone rang. An officer informed me of the crash—and that my husband had two daughters, three years old. I was stunned. He’d been living a double life while I struggled with infertility. At his funeral, I saw the girls, alone and vulnerable. Despite Andrew’s betrayal, my heart broke for them. I decided to adopt them, knowing they needed love.

The adoption was difficult, with constant doubts from others. But Carrie and Dana became mine. Over the years, their trust in me was fragile, as they whispered at night, fearful I’d send them away. At ten, I told them about their father’s lies. They were angry and confused, questioning whether I truly wanted them. I reassured them, but the tension remained.

As teens, they became more distant and angry, often lashing out. Then, at sixteen, they locked me out. I was heartbroken, fearing they no longer needed me. But after a week, I received a call from Carrie. When I returned home, the girls surprised me. They’d worked hard to redecorate the house and wanted to show me how much they loved me.

“You gave us a family,” Carrie said, tearfully. “You’ve been the best mom ever.”

Tears filled my eyes as I hugged them. “I love you both more than you’ll ever know.”

“We do know, Mom,” Dana whispered. “We always have.”
