“Goosebumps All Around”: Pope Leo XIV Delivers His First Speech as Pontiff, Calls for Peace and Unity

On May 8, 2025, the world witnessed a historic moment as Cardinal Robert Prevost stepped onto the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica as Pope Leo XIV , delivering his first public address as the newly elected leader of the Catholic Church.

The new pope’s speech was filled with messages of peace, unity, and hope , drawing emotional reactions from viewers worldwide. Speaking in Latin, he opened with the traditional greeting, “Pax vobiscum” — “Peace be with you.” He described peace not just as the absence of conflict, but as a deep, disarming force rooted in humility and perseverance.

He emphasized that this peace should reach every corner of the globe, especially those suffering in war-torn regions, families in crisis, and individuals struggling in silence.

In a nod to his predecessor, Pope Francis, Leo XIV said:

“The Pope who blessed Rome gave his blessing to the world… Allow me to follow up on that same blessing: God loves us. God loves you all. And evil will not prevail!”

His words resonated deeply, with many online viewers sharing their emotional reactions. One wrote: “Goosebumps.” Another added: “His words brought actual chills… peace and unity are exactly what our world needs right now.”

The pope also addressed the global Church directly, urging believers to move forward without fear, united in faith. He described Christ as the light the world continues to seek and called on Catholics to help build bridges through dialogue, compassion, and service.

Leo XIV thanked the cardinals for their trust and honored his roots, referencing his time as bishop in Chiclayo, Peru. He quoted Saint Augustine: “With you I am a Christian, and for you I am a bishop,” and expressed his vision for a missionary, open, and compassionate Church —one that stands close to the poor, the suffering, and the marginalized.

He concluded by aligning his message with the day’s liturgical significance—the Supplication to Our Lady of Pompeii—inviting the faithful to join him in prayer for peace and guidance as he begins his papal mission.

Online Reactions & Political Commentary

The address sparked immediate discussion online, particularly around its spiritual and political implications.

Some interpreted the pope’s emphasis on love and inclusion as a subtle response to global leaders like former U.S. President Donald Trump. One viewer joked:
“And sent a message to Trump! 🙏💙✝️”
Another added:
“He’s talking to you, Donnie!”

A few comments contrasted the pope’s call to “build bridges” with Trump’s well-known campaign slogan about building walls, suggesting a symbolic shift in tone between religious and political leadership.

Others responded with humor, speculating how long it would take before Trump tried to “fire” the pope—a reference to the former president’s tendency to publicly dismiss critics.

Despite the lighthearted takes, many praised the pope’s inclusive tone and hopeful message, expressing optimism about the direction of the Church under his leadership.

Historic Election and Global Response

Pope Leo XIV’s election came after a conclave of 133 cardinals following the passing of Pope Francis. The decision was announced with the famous “Habemus Papam!” —“We have a Pope!”—as white smoke rose above the Sistine Chapel, signaling the selection of the first American pope in history .

Born in Chicago and having served as a missionary in Peru, Leo XIV brings a unique blend of pastoral experience and international perspective to the role. Before becoming pope, he led a key Vatican office responsible for appointing bishops—an influential position during Pope Francis’ reform-driven papacy.

His election marks a significant turning point for the Catholic Church, which serves over 1.3 billion followers worldwide. Many believe his leadership will continue the progressive reforms championed by Pope Francis, including outreach to the poor, environmental advocacy, and a more compassionate stance toward marginalized communities.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump also reacted to the news, posting on the official White House X account:

“Congratulations to Pope Leo XIV on your election. It is a Great Honor for our Country to see an American chosen. I look forward to meeting you—it will be a very meaningful moment!”
